A cuisine can best be defined as a specific set of cooking traditions and practices often associated with a place of origin. Besides food, a variety of beverages often are included in a cuisine, including wine, liquor, tea and coffee. A cuisine also includes the raw ingredients and original plants and animals from which the food originated.

Because new cuisines are constantly evolving, people enjoy a wide selection of various types of foods and beverages from all over the world. American, French, Italian and Vegetarian are among some of the most common cuisine types.

Due to a long history of attracting immigrants from various nations and cultures, American cuisine is extremely diverse. Native American cuisine, which was the first American cuisine, provided a wide selection of foods, including turkey, corn, beans, sunflowers, potatoes, peppers and squash. Now, these foods are consumed in a variety of other regions.

This particular cuisine type includes an array of foods once imported from other areas, which have since been adopted by Americans. For example, pizza, apple pie and ice cream originated in Europe. Burritos and tacos have their origins in Mexico. The hamburger, which originated in Germany, may be the most famous food in the U.S.

French

Italian

Imitated all over the world, Italian cuisine is exceptionally varied and nutritious. Offering pasta dishes made with various types of vegetables, this delicious cuisine is famous for its first course, which may include pasta, soups, various types of noodle coups and minestrones, risottos and timbales.

Different Regions
Emilia-Romagna: known for lasagna, tortellini, mortadella (pork sausage), prosciutto (dry-cured ham) and Parmigiano (granular cheese)
Naples: home of pizza, mozzarella and pastries
Calabria: uses a lot of hot pepper for its salami
Sicily: home of gelato (ice cream) and granita (chunky sorbet)
Sardinia: famous for lamb and pecorino (sheep's cheese)
Northern Italy: home of polenta (cornmeal)
Piemonte & Lombardia: each grows its own kind of rice

A distinguishing characteristic of the Italian cuisine is its pride in the use of fresh, seasonal produce. Also, because it is extremely varied and is imitated all over the world, people can enjoy Italian cuisine no matter where they live.

Vegetarian

Vegetarian cuisine is cooking style created to eliminate the ingestion of animal products.

In the United States, a vegetarian is best defined as someone who does not eat meat. However, in some parts of the world, people who call themselves vegetarians tend to eat fish or seafood; therefore, they are not true vegetarians. Vegans are people who do not eat any form of animal meat or meat byproduct.

The American Dietetic Association says, "Appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases."

Vegetarian cuisine can be divided into two categories:

1. Meat analogues

• mimic the taste, texture and appearance of meats
• used in recipes which originally including meat

2. Traditional Vegetarian Meals

Vegetarians can enjoy a wide selection of foods, including:

• Most breads (unless they have a filling such as peanut butter or tofu slices, most breads provide inadequate protein on their own. Bread rich in protein, such as Soy Protein Bread, is always a good choice for vegetarians looking to reach their protein quota)
